The first school dining room was the large reception room on the ground floor of the main house which is now Aisholt, one of our Upper School boarding houses. In recent years, the Staff Common Room occupied the ground floor of Aisholt but this was relocated to the old library when the Murray Centre was built.
In 1933, numbers in the school had grown to 218 and a new dining room, kitchen and the South Building (now Tedworth) was opened. The mural over the fireplace in the dining room was painted by Margaret Lister (Pryor DH 1923), an alumna who had been a pupil at both Kent and Cold Ash before going on to Art School at the Slade.
The stone fireplace, under the mural was purcahsed in Italy by Miss Olive Willis (founder).
Until the mid-1990's, meals were formal with a High Table and all the girls eating at the same time. An increase in numbers and health and safety issues required the school to move to a self-service system.
