Looking back on another unforgettable Founder's Weekend. This year’s celebration was the perfect finale to our summer term, brimming with talent and fun.
It was wonderful to welcome alumnae back to join in spirited lacrosse and hockey matches on the sports field. The Murray Centre was filled stunning displays showcasing the incredible work of our GCSE and A Level pupils. We were treated to entertainment all weekend, with productions of Addams Family and Little Women, alongside performances by the Choirs and Orchestras of Downe House, including Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. And our fantastic catering team treated us all with their famous afternoon tea, alongside brunch and a Sunday BBQ.
It should come as little surprise that the Alumnae Lydia Rayne Testimonial Lacrosse Match 2025 drew a record number of attendees. No fewer than 50 alumnae took to the field, joined by a strong crowd of supporters—families, friends, partners, and pupils—who formed a loud and formidable presence on the sidelines. All had gathered to honour Lydia Rayne’s remarkable 28 years of dedicated service to Downe House. Such was the popularity of the event that a second pitch had to be marked out, with two Downe House teams and two alumnae teams taking part in a truly memorable celebration.
Lydia Rayne has been a true stalwart of Downe House sport. She built her teams on a foundation of strong values: discipline, hard work, laughter, and fun. She loved nothing more than winning, and her fierce competitive spirit became the heartbeat of every team she led. That same drive was clearly on display in the testimonial matches—where the younger Downe House players were determined not to give the more experienced alumnae an easy ride! The games were played with energy, passion, and a healthy level of competitiveness—a fitting tribute to a coach who gave so much to the sport and the school.
To conclude the afternoon, heartfelt words of thanks and gratitude were shared by current pupils and Miss Williams, bringing a well-deserved tear to Mrs Rayne’s eye. Messages from former pupils, parents and colleagues poured in, capturing the deep affection and admiration felt by so many:
“Thank goodness you were our coach! You were the perfect blend of charisma, fun &fear (“MOVE”) and DH started winning because you appeared. I have so many fun and brilliant memories of laughing with you over the year” – Cesca Major (Martin, DH 2000)
“Mrs Rayne is one of the best things ever about Downe House. Good luck for the future - you will be very missed. With love Sophy, Lara and Mirry xx” – Sophy Harries (DH parent)
“Thank you so much Mrs Rayne! You always brought out the best in everyone with such kindness, gravitas and an ever present twinkle in the eye. I may be rather slow now but the joy running continues to bring me is thanks to you! Have a glorious retirement x” – Tamara Astor (DH 2007)
A heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us for a weekend full of joy and Downe House spirit. We can’t wait for next year!
